THE FORT PILAR Shrine in Rio Hondo will be the center of activities on Saturday, October 12 as Zamboanguenos living here and around the world celebrate the feast day of Nuestra Senora de la Virgen del Pilar, the city’s patron saint.
Religious activities on Saturday will kick off at 3am with the mañanita mass, to be followed by a series of masses set at 430am, 6am, 730am and 9am.
The grand procession is set at 3pm from the Metropolitan Cathedral in La Purisima Street to the Shrine where the Pontifical Mass will follow at 5pm. Masses are also scheduled at 6:30pm and 8pm.
Originally known as Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza, the Fort Pilar Shrine “is a 17th century military defense fortress built by the Spanish colonial government in Zamboanga City. The fort, which is now a regional museum of the National Museum of the Philippines, is a major landmark of the city and symbol of its cultural heritage. Outside the eastern wall is a Marian shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the city.
October 12 is a special non-working holiday in Zamboanga by virtue of Republic Act 7350.
